5 Benefits Of Hobbies

We always hear about having interests outside of work, school and so on. But why should we do this?

  1. Hobbies help you structure your time – Have you heard the saying, "Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion."?  So if you have an unscheduled evening, you might find yourself still working on that work project till late into the night. But if you had basketball game scheduled that day, you would get those tasks done much more quickly. So, hobbies can seem to create more time by encouraging efficiency.

  2. Hobbies offer a new challenge – Life can get routine and you find yourself doing the same thing over and over. Hobbies break up this up and challenge you in new ways, ways that are different from work, ways that are positive. You might discover some new things about yourself.

  3. Hobbies expands your social circle - Even if you engage in a solo activity, like drawing, you are exposing yourself to a new world of people, people who find the same thing enjoyable that you do. That way you make new connections and find a wider group of people who share your interests.

  4. Hobbies help with stress management – We can face stress in different ways daily like a rough day at work where our boss berated us. We could come home and watch TV as a distraction but having a hobby reminds us of other parts of yourself that are just as important, So you aren’t just an employee, you can be a photographer, an artist or athlete. So it reminds you your eggs aren't all in one basket.

  5. Hobbies have physical health benefits - Research has found that engaging in enjoyable activities during down time were associated with lower blood pressure, total cortisol, body mass index, higher mental state levels and lower levels of depression. Hobbies are good for your mind and your body.

Will you be taking up a new hobby, if you haven’t already?
